My
opinions on polygamy
Originally published 7 January 2002 A rather interesting issue was raised among the Malaysian consciousness recently. The proposed legalisation of polygamy amongst the non-Muslim citizens of the country. Being an Islamic country, it is legal for a Muslim man to have up to four wives simultaneously, so long as his other wives allow him to do so. Therefore, it appears that certain dirty old men who wield political clout within this country want to have the same priveleges too. Let's back up a minute here. From a purely biological standpoint, polygamy is indeed a boon as it allows the members of a species to mix-and-match his or her genetic material in order to produce a maximum number of strong and healthy offspring, thereby increasing the probability that their genes will survive and continue to be passed on to the next generation. This is a biological instinct that exists in every single living being on the planet, and is the drive behind our continuous search for the perfect mate. Polygamy has existed throughout the history of human civilization, stretching back to the days of our cave-dwelling ancestors. They existed in harsh environments and the homo sapien has yet to conquer the food chain. In fact, we may even owe our existence to polygamy. Infant mortality rates continued to be very high up until the dawn of the 20th century, and with a birth cycle of nine months, how many offsprings could be produced by a man without the option of having multiple partners? This is merely an attempt to beat the odds, in the hopes that at least one child would be able to survive to sexual maturity in order to ensure that his or her genes would continue to exist. Fast forward to today. We are living in an age where the deaths of newborn infants is a rarity thanks to advances in medical technology. Statsitically speaking, almost every infant born in Malaysia is assured to survive to adulthood, virtually eliminating the need for polygamy. And yet, why do we still have people advocating this practice, and more importantly, when was the last time we've seen a woman promoting it? Behind their lame excuses of having sick wives, or the biological prerogative of the male member of the species to go around fucking anything without a penis, not only are they portraying themselves as nothing more than base sexual predators, always looking for the next piece-of-ass to conquer. As a male member of the human species, I find myself insulted and dissapointed. Have millennia of our much-vaunted civilization been for naught? We proclaim ourselves to be the masters of our world, and consider ourselves cultured thanks to the development of art, music, and science. With that said, isn't it funny that certain members of society still cling on to the aforementioned excuses as justification for looking for extra wives for procreational purposes? The institution of marriage is a sacred thing and not one to be taken lightly. Believe it or not, there are some people out there who will simply marry just to ensure a constantly supply of sex. But there is so much more to not only a marriage, but a loving relationship between a man and a woman, than just sex. What about unconditional love, companionship, and forsaking all others? Without all these to tie a man and woman together, we may as well be nothing more than animals. Sex-charged beasts ruled not by our brain, but by our libidos. It is high time that men realise that women are not objects that can be changed, replaced, or thrown away, but are instead are people with feelings, wants and desires just as they are. Imagine the uproar if a woman were to abandon her husband if he was impotent or not capable of fulfilling her sexual desires. And yet, in the eyes of society, these are perfectly acceptable reasons for a man to abandon his wife. Polygamy is a dreadfully outmoded concept that no longer has any relevance in today's society. If a man truly loves a woman, he would never abandon her for any reason whatsoever, and vice versa. Those who would support the idea of polygamy would do very well to reconsider their views and to start updating their opinions and views of women. |
